Sarangbang Bukchon Traditional Culture Center to hand down the tradition

Bukchon Traditional Culture Center was opened in October 2002 in order to offer a chance to share the better traditional cultural programs and to implant pride in the people’s mind.
Originally, this place is a residence of the family of Min finance secretary; the family in power in the last times of Joseon Dynasty and also is well known as a residence of ‘madam Gye-dong’. As a whole, it is comprised of anchae(the main building of home), bakkatchae(outer quarters), haengrangchae(an annex), byeolchae(a separated building) and Sadang(the shrine) however, it has been in the process of remodeling based on the newly issued regulation of renovation of hanok which firmly asserted a maximum preservation and restoration of the originality of hanok.

The residents of the village are likely to gather together on the floor in front or the sarangbang (a meeting point in the house where traditionally is used to be a men’s part of the house) The inside of the meeting room where many events are held. A cozy garden of anchae.

The haengrangchae has been converted into a public information hall where exhibits the materials about the entire history and the value of Bukchon.
There you may have a chance to have a look upon Bukchon tour information to get to know well about the Korean traditional culture and about the national treasures scattered in the area.

Anchae is now utilized as a office for the Hanok Division, Also sarangbang is for the various conferences.

Also the conference rooms where the meetings touching upon the traditional cultural events would be held and the sarangbang to which people can easily visit are well furnished.

A small pavilion situated behind of the anchae was actually a Sadang (the shrine) but now it is used for the residents’ convenience where people are allowed to enjoy the scenery of hanok and share a cup of tea with friends.
In the deep back side of pavilion, there you will meet byeolchae where classes are held. The Center is sorted for making people enjoy the traditional culture by offering classes such as calligraphy, folktale, tea ceremony, traditional knotting, traditional embroidery…etc.
Different cultural events such as movies and musical concerts have been planning quite often.
In Bukchon, you would meet the real tradition while wandering around the narrow and swelling alleys of the village full of the hanoks standing in a row along the alley. Bukchon Traditional Culture Center is the place where the tradition is perfectly kept to be handed down the importance of the traditional residences for the future generations
